ACUPUNCTURE SERVICES

What Is TCM Acupuncture?

We offer Acupuncture Services in North Edmonton. Traditional Chinese Medicine Acupuncture is the practice of inserting ultra fine needles into specific points that are located along 14 Meridians or Channels in your body. There are 365 Acupuncture points. Traditional Chinese Medicine is the philosophy that we all have an energy flow throughout our body distributing Qi (pronounced “Chi”) to our tissues. When there is an obstruction in the flow of Qi or an imbalance in the Yin and Yang, health problems may arise. The World Health Organization and the National Institute of Health endorse Acupuncture Services as being effective treatments for numerous conditions, some of which are listed below:

  • Mental-emotional (Stress, Depression, Anxiety, Insomnia);
  • Musculoskeletal and Neurologic (Headaches, Migraines, Facial Paralysis, Stroke, Neck, Shoulders, Lower Back Stiffness and Pain, Sciatica, Knee Pain, Ankle Pain, MVA Injuries, Sport Injuries, Muscle Pain, Arthritic, Osteoarthritis, Inflammation, Frozen Shoulder, Tennis Elbow, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Tendonitis, Sprains, Trigeminal Neuralgia);

What Does Acupuncture Feel Like? Do The Needles Hurt?

When the acupuncturist places your needles, it is common to feel a little pinch, mild sting or dull achy sensation. It should not be painful. Some people are more sensitive than others, so we adjust our technique and the gauge of needles according to each
person’s response. We’ve needled many nervous first-timers and their responses are most commonly “that’s it? I barely felt anything!”.

How Soon Will I Start To See Changes?

This depends on what you are wanting to be addressed, how long it’s been present and your general state of health. Typically, short-term (acute) problems will respond within just a few treatments, while longer-term (chronic) problems may take up to twelve or more treatments before you’re likely to see consistent changes. This is a question that should be addressed with your acupuncturist during your first or second visit.

Will I Have To Come Get Acupuncture Forever To Keep Feeling Good?

Likely not, but this also depends on the reason(s) you’re getting treated in the first place. For short-term issues, a handful of acupuncture treatments should do the job. For chronic or longstanding issues, a maintenance schedule of some sort would be in order to keep systems running smoothly and steadily after the initial period of relief and change.

Is There Anything I Should Do Before Or After An Acupuncture Treatment?

Having Acupuncture Services on an empty stomach could make you feel lightheaded or fatigued afterward, so it is best to have something light to eat a few hours before your treatment. Eat something that’s not too filling but doesn’t leave you too hungry.
Plan your day so that you aren’t doing anything strenuous or stressful afterwards so your body can relax and heal. Also remember to drink plenty of water and eat a healthy, well balanced meal following treatment.

Is Acupuncture Safe?

Acupuncture is widely acknowledged as one of the safest forms of medicine. Acupuncture needles are pre-sterilized, individually packaged, and disposable. Acupuncturists undergo extensive training and are regulated health professionals in Alberta.

One of the greatest advantages of acupuncture is that it has virtually no side effects. Occasionally a small temporary bruise may appear at the site of an acupuncture needle. When compared to the laundry list of cautions and side effects for the average pharmaceutical drug, acupuncture is very low risk!
