Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a very common condition that results from a compression or injury of the median nerve as it travels through the carpal tunnel (a canal in the wrist). Some causes of carpal tunnel syndrome include repetitive strain, sustained compression, swelling, obesity, pregnancy, trauma, and arthritis. Symptoms of this condition include wrist pain, numbness in the hand, and a tingling sensation in the thumb and pointer finger. You might also experience some weakness in your hand or grip strength and notice some shrinking of your thumb muscles. Not all carpal tunnel syndromes require surgery, most cases do very well with conservative physiotherapy management. Your therapist will design a plan for your carpal tunnel syndrome to restore the function and sensation of your hand. Your assessment will include a scan of the neck as well to ensure that the nerve pain you are feeling in your hand is not coming from the neck area (quite common).
