Shin splints (medial tibial stress syndrome) is a condition that produces a sharp pain on the front of your shin during sport activities such as running or jumping. This condition can be caused by many factors including poor running mechanics, unsupportive footwear, or an imbalance in some of the lower leg muscles such as tibialis anterior, calf, hamstring, and quads. When left untreated, this condition can lead to stress fracture of the tibia over time. Your therapist is trained in identifying shin splints (medial tibial stress syndrome) and creating a custom treatment plan for you including addressing your running mechanics, providing footwear advice, and prescribing a home exercise program to keep your pain at bay. Your home exercise program may include stretches for tight tissues, and strengthening advice for weak tissues. Additional parts of your treatment plan may include taping, hands on therapy (manual therapy), and needling. You may also recieve advice to temporarily modify your activities (for example, decreasing running load) to allow the tissues to get adequate rest while they heal.
