Patellar Tendonitis is a common condition that creates pain and discomfort on the front of the knee. The patellar tendon is located on the front of your knee below your kneecap. The tendon is what attaches your quadriceps muscles to your tibia (shin bone). Injury to this tendon tends to occur in athletes that involve jumping or repetitive loading of the tendon such as volleyball, basketball, dancers, etc. Pain experienced during a case of Patellar Tendonitis is usually located below the knee cap and increases when jumping, squatting, doing stairs, or after sitting for a prolonged period. Pain does usually goes away when the load is removed (ie. taking a break from jumping) but needs rehabilitation for proper function and preventing future injury. This injury condition responds very well to physiotherapy. Your therapist will examine your knee and create a custom treatment plan to get your knee function back which will can possibly include manual therapy, exercises, bracing, activity modification, and needling. This condition may also be known as or referred to as Patellar Tendinopathy or nickname “Jumper’s Knee”.
