MCL INJURIES

ABOUT MCL INJURIES

MCL Injury (Medial Collateral Ligament) occurs when there is a strain or tear of the ligament on your medial knee (inner side of knee). The MCL ligament is actually the most common ligament to injure in your knee. Symptoms include pain on the medial knee, tenderness to touch, mild swelling, and a feeling of “instability” of the knee. The MCL ligament provides stability to your knee and prevents your knee from buckling inwards. The MCL ligament often heals very well with physiotherapy. Because it is so commonly injured, there is a lot of resarch about how to best treat this condition and surgical intervention is rarely needed. MCL injury (Medial Collateral Ligament) treatment may include manual therapy (hands on treatment), exercises (stretching and strengthening), and bracing (to protect the MCL ligament while it heals). Your therapist will thoroughly assess your knee on your first visit and create a custom treatment plan to return function back to your knee.
