ABOUT HIP ARTHRITIS (OA)

Hip Arthritis is a very common condition that we assess and treat at the clinic. The hip is one the body’s largest weight-bearing joints and is therefore very commonly affected by osteoarthritis. Commonly, symptoms of hip arthritis include deep groin pain and hip stiffness. Risk factors for this condition include natural aging processes, obesity, genetic predisposition, repetitive stresses on the hip, and certain high impact sports such as hockey, running, football, etc. Early stages of hip arthritis do very well with exercise therapy and physiotherapy. Having a specific daily program has been proven to decrease pain, improve range of motion, and improve your function (for example, being able to walk further without pain). Your home exercise program may also include balance training, strength training, stretching, and advice on your gait (walking technique). In addition to the home exercises, your therapist will also perform hands on treatment on your hip and additional tools may be used such as needling and Interferential Current for pain relief. Advanced cases of arthritis may qualify for hip replacement surgery. Your therapist will examine your hip thoroughly and create a custom treatment plan for your hip.
