BAKER'S CYST (POPLITEAL CYST)

ABOUT BAKER'S CYST

Baker’s Cyst (Popliteal Cyst) is a fluid filled swelling at the back of the knee that you can see and feel.  It can be painful and it can interfere with your ability to bend and straighten the knee. Commonly, this cyst or swelling pattern is actually a sign that there is an underlying pathology to your knee joint such as arthritis, gout, ACL tear, meniscus tear, etc. Treatment for Baker’s Cyst (Popliteal Cyst) should target finding the underlying cause. Your treatment options may include manual therapy (hands on therapy), home exercises (stretches and strengthening), swelling management (ice, gentle movement), and education about activities to avoid that may aggravate your condition. In some cases, the cyst may need injection therapy or aspiration to decrease pain and improve comfort. These procedures would be completed by a medical doctor. Your therapist will thoroughly assess your knee during your first visit and create a custom treatment plan to meet your needs, including medical referral to your doctor if needed.
