ACL Injury (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) occurs when there is strain or tear to the ACL ligament. The ACL ligament is located deep inside the knee and acts as a stabilizer for the knee. ACL tears happen commonly in athletes and sports that require pivoting such as soccer, basketball, football, etc. It can also happen during contact sports. Symptoms of an ACL injury include knee pain, swelling, and a sensation of “instability” in your knee. Treatment for Anterior Cruciate Ligament injuries will include manual therapy (hands on treatment), home exercise program (stretching and strengthening), bracing (to protect the ACL ligament while it heals), and possibility of surgical repair (depending on level of injury and level of function required for your sport). Your therapist is trained in assessing the integrity of your Anterior Cruciate Ligament using special tests on your first visit. They will then create a custom treatment plan for you, including referral to an orthopedic surgeon as needed. Your physiotherapist can answer all your questions and get you back to your daily activities and sports.
