FAT PAD SYNDROME

ABOUT FAT PAD SYNDROME

Fat Pad Syndrome is a musculoskeletal condition that causes pain and swelling on the front of the knee. It occurs when there is inflammation of the fat pad of the knee. The infrapatellar fat pad is a soft tissue structure inside the knee that is meant to provide cushion. It can become inflamed due to pressure or impingement and cause anterior knee pain and swelling. Pain in knee hyperextension (straightening of the knee) can be one of the signs of an inflamed fat pad. Treatment for Fat Pad Syndrome includes correcting your knee posture and your gait pattern, knee strengthening exercises, and taping or bracing to offload the knee while it heals. You will also be given advice to control inflammation and swelling such as using ice and gentle movement. Your therapist will thoroughly assess your knee on your first visit and create a custom treatment plan to address your concerns, reduce pain and inflammation, and help you reach your goals.
