PCL Injury (Posterior Cruciate Ligament)

PCL INJURIES

ABOUT PCL INJURIES

PCL Injury (Posterior Cruciate Ligament) occurs when the PCL ligament located deep inside the knee is strained. The PCL is the ligament that acts as a stabilizer and prevents hyper-extension of the knee. This ligament is bigger and stronger than the ACL so therefore it is not as commonly injured. The most common way to injure this ligament is a forceful blow to the front of your shin such as in a car accident or certain contact sports such as rugby or football. Treatment for PCL Injury (Posterior Cruciate Ligament) includes manual therapy (hands on therapy), bracing (to protect the ligament while it heals), and exercises to regain your range of motion, strength, balance, gait (walking pattern), and return to activity or sport. Your therapist is trained to detect injury to the PCL during your assessment and they will create a custom week by week treatment plan for your knee including medical consultation with an orthopedic surgeon if needed.
